Buying sex dolls by mail was illegal in the US until the 1960s

The Comstock law, passed by President Grant's administration in 1873, makes it illegal to send items, including contraceptives and sex toys, through the U.S. mail. The law was not repealed until the decade of free love in the 1960s. In 1968, sending sex dolls through the U.S. Postal Service was finally legalized—meaning for the first time dolls could be advertised for free in pornographic magazines.

Howard Stern has sex with sex dolls on live radio

Mainstream America first really introduced sex dolls in the 1990s, when American radio host Howard Stern had sex with dolls on air. Living up to his shock athlete role, Stern aired a week of shows, all dedicated to his new toy, and declared the doll the best sex he's ever had, saying "It's the best I've ever had. Sex! I swear to God."

Avant-Garde artists like Salvador Dali were inspired by sex dolls

Avant-garde art perhaps isn’t the first thing that naturally springs to mind when talking about sex dolls, but the aesthetic and appeal of the doll have inspired artists for decades. The Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali for example participated in an exhibition of surrealist art in Bordeaux in 1938. One of the installations saw a range of artists, including Dali and American-born visual artist May Ray dress in a female mannequin. Many of the mannequins were highly sexualized, with May Ray’s contribution being half-naked. The controversial artist later went on to claim that some mannequins had been ‘violated’ by the artists themselves.

In Texas, it's legal to buy guns in stores, but not sex dolls

In some U.S. states, including Texas, it is legal to work in a store and buy guns, but it is illegal to buy sex toys, including sex dolls. The public display of sex toys in stores is illegal because a 1970 law prohibits the public display of "obscene devices" (defined as "devices used primarily to stimulate the human reproductive organs"). Coincidentally, it is also illegal to own six or more vibrators. While sex toy retailers sued the state nearly a decade ago, the law remains in effect.
